Outdoors we used it to keep our supervised cat from getting into our rose bush. Yes, it didn't work as long outdoors as it did indoors (it's not intended for outdoor use), but once the cat associated the site of the can with the hissing noise, the non-functional can just sitting by the rose bush was enough to keep the cat away for quite awhile. As long as our cat was getting imprinted with the hiss/can connection indoors, just the can alone was enough, and long after neither can was functioning.
