Applicator is a sponge. You do have to press pretty hard the first time to get it to come out. The 1st coat made it look so nice. The lack of clear instructions after application is a downer. So I had to test different ways. 1st coat I wiped it down because I wasn't sure but it still cleaned the shoes and look great but some stains obviously came back. 2nd coat I let dry and again it reminds me of paint so its supposed to cover it not actually clean it.
