I haven't dry boiled to see if it auto shuts off the kettle completely. Maybe that's when the function kicks on. Otherwise, it seems to be an auto switch to warm mode. So far I love this as I'm always drinking hot drinks throughout the day and like the keep warm temp stays on longer than any kettle I've ever used. Cute, fast, wide mouth to clean.
