Review: One of the best PS2 to HDMI converters out there - I've been trying different PS2 to HDMI converters through the years, ever since I brought my PS2 out of storage. The one I stuck with the longest was Levelhike. It had pretty good quality, especially for the price. I also just didn't want to break the bank with those high end converters (often costing over 100 dollars) so it was good enough for me. After about 2 years though, I got curious and wanted to see if I could find anything better. I decided to just keep trying out different HDMI converters in hopes that I could find better quality. I saw a video on YouTube talking about different HDMI converters and surprisingly no one mentioned Kaico. It was from a comment that I saw someone recommend it. I had bought and tried it for myself and they were completely right. Kaico's HDMI converter looked absolutely stunning compared to Levelhike. The colors were better, the on-screen text and textures looked sharper, and the image mostly filled the screen (just had 2 small black bars on the sides but you don't notice them). I have to say that I'm very surprised and impressed by the quality. I had tried another brand before this, ElectronPulse, and they had all sorts of demonstrations and reviews on their website of how "high tech" their HDMI converter was. I wasn't too impressed by it when I personally tried it out. It felt on par with Levelhike, and honestly, I kind of felt like it may have even been a step down in visual quality, but there were times where I couldn't clearly tell unless I took a side by side picture (which I didn't do but I wish I did). But anyway, I highly recommend you try out Kaico's HDMI converter. Its honestly really good. I tried it on both a Samsung and Sony TV and it worked on both. I had a weird issue where Levelhike wouldn't work on my Sony. It would be weirdly stretched out and if you looked closely, the image would have a staticky shaking effect. It was bizarre and even the company couldn't answer me as to why it wasn't compatible. But I'm happy to say that Kaico works great on my Sony. On a side note, I'd also recommend Zeskit Maya's 8k HDMI cables. They're 2.1 certified and one of the best on the market at an affordable price. They really help bring the most out of my consoles, especially the PS2. You won't regret it. Edit:just wanted to clarify with the black bars on the TV. For some reason, it's very small and barely noticeable on my Samsung tv that I use to play on in my living room. Whenever I choose to play on my Sony tv in my bedroom, the black bars are bigger and more noticeable, giving it almost like a 4:3 aspect ratio look. If you have anime or tv shows from the 90s/2000s on dvds, you know exactly what I mean because the picture back then wasnt made in wide screen like today. Its very weird that the aspect ratio is like this for my tvs. It actually was in wide screen for the first time I used Kaico on my Sony, but then it just automatically defaulted to the 4:3 look. Just wanted to put that out there that it might look different on different tv brands like it did for me.
Review: Great for the price - Works at both 480i and 480p. It's just a converter, not a scaler, so it will pass along the 720x480i or 720x480p signal to your TV through HDMI, image quality will then depend on how exactly your TV processes those resolutions. I don't have a way to measure lag from analog signals input, but it seems fine. Haven't tried any ultra fast twitch games like shmups, but Tony Hawk, Gran Turismo 3, and GTA San Andreas all played just fine and I'm fairly picky. Unit does require external power - I was able to plug the USB cable into my PS2 fat just fine, but my PS2 slim kept shutting down without warning when I tried to power it from the console itself. Problem stopped when I connected the power cable to an external USB brick, no problems since. Video quality is decent, and playable. Image quality/processing is about on par with my 2008 LCD (back when TVs still had component input jacks). It's a million times better than the cheap, video focused composite-only tuners that are built into cheap converter boxes and some modern TVs, but it's still not as crispy as a nice upscaler like an OSSC or an internal HDMI mod. Audio: Audio is good, and left and right channels are correct and not reversed (NOT the case for all HDMI adapters) A good low-hassle solution.
