Horizontal would be fine. It says it's fully submersible but I'm reading the opposite here. Any help?** A: The whole heater should be submersed in water because the thermostat is at the top. If the top sits out of the water you're not using the temperature of the water with the thermostat, then and it will be inaccurate. It will still work, but if you get a draft of cold that wafts in from somewhere into the top of your tank, it will stop heating the tank and that cold air will lower the temperature. It's also a good idea to place it slightly slanted so heat rising from the bottom where the heating element is located does not go straight to the top and give an inaccurate reading on the thermostat above it. Placing it this way is absolutely necessary for larger tanks with a high wattage heater because it produces a lot of heat, but not so necessary for smaller tanks. If you want to place something as small as a 25–50 watt heater straight up and down, then go right ahead so long as all of its submerged in the water. **Q: gallons heated?** A: I've got a 300w heater in my 75 gallon tank and it's set to around 86 degrees and has it heated up to within 85.5 Fahrenheit.
