If you clean all areas the tape will touch with alcohol and then wipe off any residue from the alcohol this tape will never come off. I've used 3m tape for years when a weld would mess up my art piece. The trick is to completely rub the plastic coating to get a good bond and use a sharp object to carefully remove it, then join the steel and clamp it or put a heavy weight on it.
