The Volvo part uses a silicone rubber type gasket and this one appears to be a traditional paper gasket. I followed some advice from the intent and coated the paper gasket with clear, synthetic (non-petroleum) teflon grease (SuperLube) and it has worked very well--no leaks. Here's a valuable tip. You will notice that some of the holes in the pump housing for the bolts/studs are oval and some are round. The ones that are round fit studs in the block that SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED. Their nuts should be removed. The idea is that you take out the bolts (that go into the oval holes) that are in the bloc and leave the studs. This way you put the greased gasket against a CLEAN block surface and then slide on the pump over the studs and pull up or lever up on the thing and then tighten the bolts down at the far end of the oval holes. This gives some tension for the o-ring against the head. If you take out all the studs and bolts you will make it impossible to lever up and you will have a leaky head o-ring. Also, use a little bit of automotive thread sealer on the bolts you remove because they may protrude into the water jacket. Only put the thread sealer on a few threads and NOT AT THE END of the stud.
