The body of the meter measures 115 mm long. I think you have inadvertently switched it from measuring the distance from the rear of the device to measuring from the front, or vice versa. I mentioned in my review that it was possible to do this accidentally. If this isn't the reason then it needs returning. **Q: Any good for outdoor measurements - in daylight?** A: It seems to give a believably accurate measurement to whatever you're pointing it at distances of up to at least 35 metres away, even in broad daylight. But in daylight it can be very difficult to tell what you're pointing it at if that's more than about 6 metres away, unless the surface you're pointing it at is large, plain and highly reflective. It's a small dot and not dazlingly bright outside in daylight. **Q: Does this have a visible beam, if not how do you see the red dot 100m away ?** A: On the back of the device it says accurate up to 50m, and there is only the laser light. No more drooping tape or needing help to take measurements, this is a very simple, one-handed solution. Place the measure against the opposite wall, press a button to see a laser sighting spot, then press again to take the measurement. The distance is calculated from the back of the measure, so you don't need to adjust for the length of the device. There's a memory feature for storing you readings.The display is large, bight and very easy to read. I've used mine quite a few times over the last 6 months and the battery indicator still shows a full battery - it's nit like you're firing a laser constantly, just a couple of seconds.The measure comes in a little bag, which sips neatly into your pocket. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ mm accurate, no case, not robust, unable to calibrate. *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 5 April 2021* Attractive unit, good display and backlight, easy to use and comprehensive functionality, large objective lens, however has a few important issues:1) No way to calibrate, unlike many other units.2) No case included (really important).3) Unit has hard plastic outer not rubber.These units are light weight with a laser and large lens in the end which needs to be kept clean and protected. A case, at least an end cap, is an essential component to protect against damage. Other comparable products come with a case, rubber outer and for less money too. Will last several minutes in my tool bag without these basics for protection. Knocked 1 star for that reason.Testing has revealed that the devicesI tried are (understandably) sensitive to the surface being aimed at. I found wood and anything glossy gave up to +/-5mm errors and also inconsistent readings when repeating the exact same measurement. Matt painted surfaces worked best and gave completely consistent and completely accurate readings, frankly, better and much easier to take than using any human operated tape measure. To achieve accuracy and consistency I am now placing a piece of white copier paper and blutack if measuring against anything wood or shiny. This also helps with aim over longer distances. Used this way I found it mm accurate to the measuring (1 mm) resolution of the machine.Furthermore if seeking to determine accuracy of these devices they must be compared against at least a calibrated tape used at the calibrated temperature. Your £5 tape from Wilco outside on a cold day against a brick wall won't do. I have one calibrated 3m tape and 5 general use tapes. They measure up to 2mm different from my calibrated tape. In short, don't dis the device because it doesn't check against your inexpensive tool box tape. Tolerances add up. Your tape could, be wrong and most importantly your tested surface also needs to be controlled and consistent.Reluctantly returned in favour of an item with a case and ability to calibrate.
