My house was built in 1983 and the fireplace is the standard brick masonry from the era. The old brass set was solid and gave good fire protection, but was old and tired looking. This unit is as solid as the old brass one and the fire protection is equal, but it looks great and it easy to clean. When I measured, I couldn't figure out whether I needed the medium or large set. My fireplace rough area is 28 by 37. I finally decided to go for the large one and I am glad I did. If I had purchased the medium size, it would have covered the fireplace, but only by 1/4 inch on the sides. The large one fits very nicely and covers the hole with several inches on each side --- very good fire protection. The mesh doors are cabinet style and have magnets to securely close -- They are very solid. The glass doors fold in half and open out completely -- this makes the doors easy to open and clean. When the doors are open, they are compact and lie flat against the frame. When the doors are closed they fit securely -- very solid. There is no track -- like the old brass fireplace doors. There is a nice set of heavy wire mesh doors behind the glass ones. They are usually closed when there is a fire. Since these doors are mesh, the heat comes through. I doubt there is a temperature limit on the mesh doors. The glass doors are very reflective. I went to a place called "The Hearth Store" and they started pointing me to fireplace doors starting at $750 and going all the way up to $2500 so let me share my observations of this. 1. The product is sleek and low profile. 2. The construction is not sloppy. The sheet metal is bent very nicely without sharp edges 3. The glass doors are solid and open nicely. 4. There are magnets that keep the doors closed and they are very strong. Not some flimsy piece of junk. The hearth store I went to tried to push me towards doors with magnets that started at $1000. 5. It took me about an hour to install but I was taking my time and that included removing my old screen. If you want a nice black fireplace door that looks great but doesn't detract from your fireplace (mine has nice woodwork and a marble surround) then this is a great choice. And dear lord, don't get caught up in the spend more get higher quality game. Its a door that MUST meet safety requirements because there's a FIRE on the other side. You'd be silly to spend $1000 on something that is going to get soot all over it! Save your money on a new front door or high end screen door instead! *Con* There is only 1 con and it may be specific to my fireplace. The top support (lintel?) that this bolts to on the top was difficult to attach because the thumb screws wouldn't catch on the 1/8 inch angle iron.
