After they formed the chrysalis, we took the top off and attached it to the side of the habitat. Once they arrived, we added a couple cotton balls with Gatorade/sugar water and fruit at the bottom for them to enjoy. This was an awesome experience and we will be back next year to get another batch! You will need a mesh cage for the end of the butterfly lifecycle. **Q: How many days does it take for them to hatch from when you receive the caterpillars?** A: We received our caterpillars on the 10th and they formed their chrysalis on the 22nd. NOTE TO POTENTIAL BUYERS: If you have never raised butterflies before, beware. It is a time-consuming process that requires absolute vigilance. If you make even ONE mistake, your butterflies will NOT be able to fly. A grounded butterfly is a dead butterfly. Even if you keep it in the enclosure (and feed it), it will die in less than 2 weeks. If you force a flightless butterfly out of the enclosure, it will get eaten immediately. This is a hobby for the dedicated only.
