You will also need a no study license for GMRS radio service if in the United States of America, also. For a business, you will need a business band license. There are public bands that require no license at all that are covered by this radio. The American FRS service (Family Radio Service) is a no license band in the 462 megacycle band and the 468 megacycle band. It allows 2 watt on some channels and Β½watt on others. There are 22channels now. This radio covers that but not certified for it. But that rule is not enforced unless you run a lot of power. For the record, it is illegal to use it on FRS. It is also illegal to go 75 miles per hour on the interstates. The next license free band is the new MURS band. It is five channels on 158 megacycles, voice, data, FM narrow and FM wide. It is more lenient than FRS. It is 2 watts also but you can run external antennas and computer interfaces. This radio covers that band as well, though not certified for it. Just keep the power around that 2 watt legal limit and nobody will know. I would not run the 50 watts the radio can do (if I used this radio for these bands at all). That is a total of 27 frequencies that are license free that this radio can do. I know this radio can not do 2 watts. The lowest is 5 watts. Just as mentioned before, it is also illegal to go 75 miles per hour on a 70 interstate. But none of us do that. What is more dangerous? Speeding or running your radio in a public band with a tiny bit more power? However, get on a public service frequency, a utility frequency, law enforcement or government frequency and you will get three square meals a day, a cot to sleep in, a gym, medical care, and education completely for free courtesy of the Federal communications commission. Get the GMRS license, about $50. Get the amateur radio license, that is free with some mild study. Maybe even stretch rules a little and use the grey zone unlicensed frequencies. You can also only listen and keep everything legal. You can also drive the speed limit all the time. **Q: is the programming cable included? I can't find it for sale seperate anywhere.** A: The one I purchased did come with a programming cable. However, I have had difficulties with the software drivers working with the cable. Seems that the software was designed for one cable, but that many of the radios have a generic cable with them. Sometimes the driver for the cable doesn't want to recognize the COM port. After several attempts I did get it to work but don't really know what I did different to make it work. Other than that and a lousy instruction booklet the radio works great. I mounted mine to the panel on my center console (dashboard in F150 Lariat SC4x4) which held the cigarette lighter. Removed the lighter, used RTV to mount the unit and tucked the rest behind the opening in the dash and routed the CAT5 line through the hole the lighter was in. Looks fairly neat if I don't say so myself.
