Usually it's already selected for the country you bought it in. **Q: would this even work anymore? what's the highest version of ios it's compatible with?** A: The one I just checked which was bought last August 2021 is right now 15.7.2. I have replaced the older ones because of Audible. If it’s too old you can still use it but you’ll get an older version which doesn’t give you your full library. I still use my older ones and I have one I bought in Sept. 2022. Now I’ve just bought another. I don’t have an I phone. I haven’t had any other problems with apps being too old. I had a British Airways app that they finally updated to these versions. Hope this helps.
