It needed to be easy to take on and off and at the same time not chafe the back of my neck with metal etc. I have worn this necklace for over a year now and found that provided you take it off during showering (soaking it causes it to break down much faster) as well as tighten the knots with needle nose pliers every so often, it holds up.Although it may seem pricey for a piece of leather which can easily be created on your own, It was worth it to me to pay an extra 2-3 dollars and source one from a company that makes these as a business.
