It uses the current present on the phone line to trickle-charge the internal batteries when the line is not in use. **Q: Can you change the cord on this phone or is it "hard wired?" I like the longer cords.** A: Michael is correct. You can chose the cord length of your choice for both the handset and the phone itself. When I bought my phone, I also purchased a longer coiled cord for the handset. Great phone. **Q: Can the be wall mounted?** A: It can't be wall mounted if they don't include the mount in the box. Mine didn't include one..... **Q: Does this phone have a voicemail indicator light or any other way of signaling that a voicemail has been received?** A: From the description of the phone's capabilities it does not appear to have a built-in voicemail or messaging system, so I wouldn't expect it to have a light to indicate voicemail on the unit. They are all excellent phones for the price. Let's get the obvious things out of the way first. No, this phone is not backlit. If you want backlighting on the display, you want the white model: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007B5VH0E. The white model also has a digital answering machine (no tapes needed), which the black model does not have. Also, some users have complained about the speakerphone. Let's be clear: the speakerphone is for people with perfect hearing, and it always was. Speakerphones, in general, are not designed for hearing-impaired folks; you would need the equivalent of a megaphone. For people with normal hearing, the speakerphone works just fine. For people with impaired hearing, like my wife, the handset has clear, bold sound, and you can increase the volume further with the Audio Assist button (although my wife seldom needs the Audio Assist, despite having moderately-high hearing loss). The very capable sound in the handset, combined with the large buttons, make it an excellent choice for those that are farsighted (like I am), and/or those with moderate to relatively high hearing loss. The ringer is fairly loud at its highest setting; I use the lowest setting in my office. We also like the call log, and the fact that you get a visual indication when someone else is using the phone line. I chose this phone for my office because I liked the older black model, but I also liked the features on the white phone we got for the kitchen. With the exception of the backlit display and the answering machine, both phones are identical. To accomodate the backlit display and answering machine, the white model has a power adapter, whereas the black model uses two AA batteries (they are not proprietary batteries, despite the Amazon description) to power the Caller ID, which I expect to last for at least a couple of years before they need replacing (based on my experience with the older model).
