My method is to simply soak it overnight in liquid soap / dish-washing liquid in a bowl - rinse it out completely the next morning and let it dry. If there is any residual odor, then repeat the process one more time and all the smell should be gone completely. The cycle of soaking and drying is what eliminates the odor - once the smell is gone it will not come back again. This shaving brush is made up of extremely stiff bristles and the wooden handle tends to absorb water - so one has to be careful about soaking the brush in water. I think drying it out properly in between cycles is the way to go. I have used it to shave my head and it has worked well in exfoliating my scalp when applying lather to my head. I might have to apply a layer of polyurethane to the wooden handle to help preserve it - hence the four stars as this should have been done by the manufacturer - a shaving brush is intended to be used with hot water and the wooden handle should have been protected. The price of this brush is very good and it is a large brush that works for the purpose for which it was intended. There was some shedding of a couple of bristles the first and second time around but that is standard for any shaving brush.
