However apart from the price I am very happy with this purchase, we needed a stair gate to stop our puppy going upstairs and due to the bannister design the gate wouldn’t sit properly, now it works just fine. Feels nice and sturdy and was very easy to follow the instructions! Review: Difficult to install and not fit for purpose - Waste of money - difficult to install as the sticky strips don't stick to the straps. These then stick to the banister so rips paint off when adjusting the position (the whole point of getting this was so I didn't damage the banister). Advertised as universal but did not work on my banister so false advertising. My square bannister measurws 45cm all round.** A: It will fit. My bannister measures 48cm all round and is square and it fits. There wasn’t a lot of slack left on the cords though so it was tricky to pull them tight - I ended up having to grip each end with a pair of pliers and use those to pull them tight as there wasn’t enough slack left to get a solid hold with fingers alone. But i got it on, it is rock solid, and I didn’t have to drill into our 120 year old staircase!! **Q: How wide is this, how much narrower will it make the opening for the stairgate?** A: It will narrow the opening by about 23mm in total. You have the wood which is 20mm but also a metal bracket that tucks behind the wood to pull and hold the straps tight. That adds 2-3mm. **Q: Would this work on a round metal railing as thick as a coke can?** A: I think so.
