The "pull" is made of metal but the teeth are plastic. I have a VERY old Columbia fleece (20 years old or so) and a new fleece by the same company. Both zippers are made by YKK, a very reputable and long established zipper manufacturer. I've never had a problem with either zipper and frankly plastic teeth are the way to go for this application. The only down-side with the new zipper is that it is that it is too short (in my opinion) being about 5" from the neckline or about 7" total.
