They are chemicals. If someone invented a fragrance-free product, I'm sure they would charge twice as much for it. i don't think it's a bad or particularly strong smell. If I had a choice, I would rather it have an orange or cinnamon smell, but this is perfume-y. It doesn't smell medicinal to me. I get frequent migraines and this smell doesn't trigger me. It doesn't last long, it goes away when the residual wetness dries (within a couple of hours), it does not mat or discolor their fur, and it does not irritate the skin. The tubes are easier to open and to empty completely with one hand while you are holding onto your cat with the other. The cats just walk away afterward, while with Advantage they would immediately run and hide as though it was hurting them. I put it on 10 cats every 2 months, and when I open the tube, they don't start squinting their eyes and crouching and ducking their heads like they always did when they would see or smell the Advantage. I can do everybody in less than an hour. I also like the fact that one size fits all (mine are between 6 and 21 pounds) instead of having to buy separate ones for under and over 9 pounds. I think the smell also might help keep the cats from bothering the area and accidentally swallowing it. Whatever you think of the smell, Cheristin is absolutely better than Advantage. People complaining about smell.. well DUHH, it's a medication. What do you expect it to smell like.. Perfume? Give me a break. Application was easy and typical if you've used other flea treatments. You just part their fur on the back of their neck and squeeze the tube (above the shoulder blades.) Within a few hours I was seeing black spots on my orange tabby - which were literally dead fleas. I have been dealing with fleas for the last 6 months and trying products, and this is the first where I could visually see results. When I ran a flea comb through my boy's fur I could see dead fleas on it! My poor boy was miserable, and scratching his skin non-stop for the last few days bc of the fleas. He has been sleeping like a baby all day, probably bc he's been restless from itching and discomfort. My cat had no discomfort or concerning skin/fur reactions although his hair looks a little spikey like a punkrocker. The "bad smell" was worth 100% worth it.
