My daughter is 7 months old and hasn't quite mastered sitting on her own yet and is also trying to crawl. I have hardwood floors, so this puzzle mat is perfect for protecting her head from the inevitable bumps along the way. She also loves all of the bright colors.I did notice a strong smell when I unzipped the bag, but the smell quickly dissipated and I haven't noticed it since then.There are 36 12"x12" puzzle pieces and 26 border pieces that can be arranged in many different ways to fit your space. There are 4 puzzle tiles for each of the 9 colors (red, orange, pink, yellow, purple, 2 shades of green, and 2 shades of blue), but my set only came with 5 different colors of border pieces and most of them were pink (10 pink, 6 red, 4 orange, 4 green, and 2 blue), so I thought that was a little odd. I don't use the borders, but if you do, don't expect to be able to match the colors of the tiles with the border pieces.The mat seems to be holding up well so far and it gets a lot of use daily. My daughter loves rolling around on the floor and I feel less anxious about her getting hurt now that I have this foam mat. We haven't had these for very long, so I will update if durability becomes an issue. But they are just what I was expecting from a foam mat. The pieces fit together perfectly, and the colors are bright without being gaudy. The main issue I have is that the edge pieces are random colors, mostly blue and green with one set of orange, one set of yellow, and one set of purple. However, it still looks fine, so I'm not taking away any stars for that even though my preference would have been to have at least one set of edge pieces for every color. But that's really just personal preference! This mat is very big for the price too (I believe I bought this for about 30 bucks)! So many other brands give you half the size for more money. Overall, we were very happy with the mat and I'm considering buying another to expand the floor space the mat covers as he gets more curious and mobile.The things I like about the mat -1.) It's fun and brightly colored and captures his attention as he studies it as he's playing on the floor; and it looks cute for a kids play area.2.) It has edge pieces that surround the perimeter of the mat to give a more finished look.3.) It's configurable in any way you want so you can design it in different patterns. Also, the edge pieces will go on any side so you're not constrained at all in the layout.4.) It's relatively comfortable to sit and play on; we have it on a hardwood floor and as an adult I can crawl around on my hands and knees and it doesn't hurt.5.) It's a good size and a good price; for about $30 you have a place that covers about 6 x 6 which is much cheaper than an area rug and can be easily wiped clean versus carpeting (which is important with little kids!)The two things that I "dislike" are:1.) The edge pieces are too easy to get off, and my son is obsessed with pulling them off and chewing on them. I think if they were wider it would be harder for little hands to easily grab and pull off.2.) I wish the mat were a little thicker.
