The box arrived intact and I was happy to see the box had a previous freight shipping label from Fender's San Bernadino factory to desertcart's Channahon warehouse. 1. OVERALL: This guitar arrived well packed and blemish free. This is a beautifully built and finished guitar. The sunburst and double binding is a great look. The knobs/pots felt fine, and the tuners, bridge and nut were ok as well. A bit of string stretching and string lube and this guitar holds tune pretty well. The guitar comes with very light strings, feels like 9s. Easy to play, however I have a heavy touch and could hear the tuning issues. Swapped to 10s and all good. 2. FRETS: The first thing I checked for was high frets with a fret rocker. Happy to find there were none. 3. SETUP: Out of the box, the relief and action were out of spec but playable. The out of the box set up along with Fender's specifications are shown below. Relief at 8th fret, capo on 1st fret: 0.30 mm New vs 0.203 mm Spec. Action at 12th: 2.25mm New vs 1.6mm Spec. A quick truss rod and bridge adjustment produced the factory spec, that I was happy with, buzz free and no dead frets. It's worth noting that there were no sharp frets out of the box. It's winter and the humidity in my house is very low, in the teens. Within a week, I did feel sharp fret ends. Short term, I plan to keep this in a case with a Boveda humidity pack. I'll likely need to eventually dress the fret ends because I prefer to leave my guitars in stands, out of the case. 4. Finally, the part that is subjective: I love the way this guitar plays and sounds. The neck profile is a bit thinner than I prefer but workable. The sound is classic telecaster. Overall, this is a well built guitar that will need a good setup out of the box. The one thing I didn't like was the shallow input jack. When using a right angle cord, the plug doesn't seat fully. Also a known issue with the constantly loose jack on this style Telecaster jack. The solution is to replace with an Electrosocket jack cup. There are several brands sold, I installed the one from KAISH and am very happy with it. March 31 2025 update: I did end up buying a Stew Mac end file and spent a quick 1/2 hour dressing the fret ends. Nice and smooth now. This guitar does seem to be more susceptible to humidity than my other guitars. Went away for a week traveling, came back to dead frets in the 5th fret area. A quick 1/2 turn to the truss rod to add relief and the issue was resolved. Also snugged up the four neck bolts. Had no similar issues with my other two guitars in the same room. July 2025 Update: 1 mod and 1 repair. Mod: Replaced the stock 42mm nut that was not properly cut. Initially tried a Graphtech PQL-5000-00 42mm nut but it was a touch too shallow and I didn’t want to shim the slot. Opted for the PQL-5010-00 TUSQ XL which required sanding both the depth as well as the length but it was worth it. Repair: Replaced a defective tuner under warranty. Fender was great to deal with and the replacement was easy to install. Final thoughts: Attractive, great sounding guitar with some faults that can be fixed. So what’s the difference between this guitar and a $$$ Fender? Is it the wood, the hardware, the assembly, the finish, or the setup? I think it’s mainly the cheaper (but decent) hardware, the assembly QA and the definitely the setup. If you have the skills or are willing to learn or pay for a proper setup, this is a great buy. I’m very happy with it. Review: It's a good guitar with a few flaws but easy to play (UPDATE!) - First, I do like the guitar. I've wanted to round out my collection with a telecaster but couldn't afford the high price of a traditional Fender. For less than $500, I'm happy. But I do have a few issues with it. Packaging was minimal but arrived undamaged. I recently bought a used guitar through Goodwill that arrived with more serious packaging (double boxed and tons of bubble wrap). The Telecaster was single boxed with cardboard inserts. The neck looked pretty straight right out of the box. I don't have a luthier gauge so just eye-balled it. Frets need some dressing but I'm not cutting my hand or getting serious scratches. The fretboard was pretty dry so I used some fretboard conditioner I purchased locally. I don't actually rely upon the side fret markers to see where my hand is in relation to the fretboard. However, that's a good thing because these markers are the same color as the neck wood, making them harder to see. The pickup switch is, IMHO, mounted a bit too close to the volume control. With the bridge pickup selected, the switch almost touches the volume control. If you need to make a quick pickup selection while playing, it's a bit awkward. The input jack was mounted too low such that an angled cable head would not properly engage the jack. I had to remove the chrome electronics panel to access the jack. I then removed the second nut in order to allow more of the jack to protrude though the opening. The tuners are decent enough and keep the guitar in tune. It came with (I think) 9-42 strings which I haven't changed out. I get a great tone combined with the single coil pickups. The bridge saddles are steel. I've read that brass saddles give a better sound. Most of the chrome (pickups, bridge ash tray, control mount) needed some polishing. This model is made in Indonesia. I would recommend this guitar for beginners and more seasoned players. I only wish it had a whammy bar! UPDATE: I've found the volume pot to be scratchy in some areas and provides a poor volume adjustment. Not sure if the tone pot will have the same issues. I opened the mounting plate and applied some electronic cleaner which did not improve the pots performance. The installed pots are the small diameter ones which I think may be the cheapest. It has the straightest neck that I’ve ever seen, spotless finish, perfect intonation. All that was needed was to lower the saddle screws by one and 1/2 turns. The classic vibe has genuine Fender parts, made right alongside the name brands. I have bought a lot of cheap telecasters and although it’s pretty cheap, it is spectacular at the very least.
