Review: Very fast transfer rates, short cable - Love this little drive. Very happy that USB-C is starting to appear as an option on portable hard drives. I have owned the old style metallic Passport 5TB and the WD Elements 5TB and for me this is the best one yet. The good: - Huge 5TB capacity in a pretty small footprint. This drive is about the same size as the older Passport and Elements drives. The blue color makes it look a little slimmer. - USB-C to USB-C transfer rates steadily above 130MB/s for large files. - The USB-C cable includes a compact USB-A adapter so you can still use this with older computer ports giving full flexibility. - Comes bundled with a very slim software installer for PC and Mac. I don't use the software but generally save it somewhere in case I need it before formatting the drive. Older passport used to include upwards of 500MBs of this software but these new installers are only a few MBs. The not as good. - The included cord is pretty short, It would be nice to have a little bit longer. - The drive is no smaller than previous generations. I guess this is as small as spinning 5TB drives are going to get, now that SSD prices are coming down. Can't wait to get a 5TB SSD in this price range! - The price is generally 10-30% higher than the older Passport. I don't know that the USB-C interface and faster transfers justify the higher end of that pricing. I can't comment on longevity as I've only used the drive for a week, but so far it is fast, quiet and stable. I've always found WD drives to be reliable, but I never keep a drive in service longer than 2 years and always have a backup. I hope this one will be as reliable as my past WDs. I purchased one for $10 at my local computer store. **Q: Can I boot from this drive on a mac? In other words, is it bootable?** A: Yes, if you format the drive in Mac native format, and use a clone application like Bombich Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC), the external drive should be bootable on your Mac. You have to have macOS copied over, for it to be bootable. You hold down the option key when booting, to get a boot device selection menu during the boot. **Q: Good to use with a crome pixelbook (chrome os) ?** A: The short answer is YES. You will need to format the external hard drive through your files (blue) folder. However, before doing that, connect the external drive to your USB port and try to save a file to the hard drive. If it works fine, then you don't need to reformat. Hope that helps. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very fast transfer rates, short cable *by B***R on August 2, 2020* Love this little drive. This external drive came highly recommended by a respectable tech reviewer. And it hasn't let me down. This 5T Passport can hold a lot of data and files, including earlier versions. I found the setup to be quick and easy with my MacBook. In a couple minutes, it was up and running and backing up my files. It's lightweight and relatively small. So, you can easily bring it with you on the road to make sure that any additions to your laptop while away are promptly backed up. As someone whose laptop once crashed without any of its files being accessible by experts, believe me, this is a necessity. Were it not for my external drive, I would have forever lost almost 1.5 millions files. I now have two external drives and trade off every other day backing files up to them. Even if you back up to the cloud, I recommend an physical external drive for extra protection. ## Frequently Bought Together - WD 5TB My Passport Ultra, Blue, Portable External Hard Drive, backup software with defense against ransomware, and password protection, USB-C and USB 3.1 - WDBFTM0050BBL-WESN - Lacdo Hard Drive Carrying Case for Western Digital WD Elements/WD My Passport/My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive HDD 1TB 2TB 4TB 5TB 6TB USB 3.0 Protective Storage Travel Bag, Black - UGREEN 10 Gbps Micro B to USB C Hard Drive Cables, 1.5FT USB C to Micro B, External Hard Drive Cable Compatible with MacBook Pro/Air, iPad/Tablet, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S24, WD Seagate etc --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - πŸ›’ **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** β€” Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** β€” Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - πŸ’° **No Hidden Fees** β€” All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - πŸ”„ **15-Day Free Returns** β€” Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - πŸ”’ **Secure Payments** β€” Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** β€” Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/162098803-5tb-my-passport-ultra-blue-portable-external-hard-drive-backup](https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/162098803-5tb-my-passport-ultra-blue-portable-external-hard-drive-backup) --- *Product available on Desertcart South Africa* *Store origin: ZA* *Last updated: 2026-10-04*
