The styrofoam the kit ships in is probably the best. Keep it out of reach of unsupervised children. **Q: Does this item contain anything that would not allow it to be in your checked luggage on an airplane?** A: Ultimately, the CHEM C2000 (v2.0) does contain small quantities of materials which are classified as hazardous. However because the hazmat are in small quantities, the kits comply with 49 CFR 173.4 and therefore receive a "Small Quantity Exception" for domestic transportation. Additionally, there is a Small Quantity Exception for Air Transportation, 49 CFR 173.4a, which is approved by UPS here and FedEx (page 8). The first night we opened it I had my 12yo, 10yo, and 7yo all eager to make stuff. We did The first 15 experiments out on my back deck. We made the prettiest salt crystals and Copper Sulfate crystals. The guide has amazing pictures, environmentally safe disposal instructions, and lots of real world applications. I didn't get the CHEM3000 because of cost, but this one has so much in it. My daughter won't even notice. All three of me kids love this set, but I do not leave them unsupervised.
