Sounds great - a lesson here for UMC

*by S***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 January 2020*

Having been left a bit cold by the sound of the 60's Kinks sessions I'd bought and heard so far, and noted the 'good recording' comment, I sought out samples of this CD set - and thought, wow, that does sound good. Some radio sessions even by the best acts can sound a little staid, spartan, as the time and effort (and recording standards) compared to that employed for their hit singles and albums will often be lesser. However there can be exceptions, and also very good alternatives to the more widely known takes of songs among BBC sessions. What can also let official releases of radio sessions down is 'as is' presentation. What often makes such sessions a more enjoyable listen is the analogue warmth from the old tape to tape recordings that circulated before the modern day releases of these sessions, or even a little reverb that bootleggers used to apply to such releases. This is ultimately a grey market release. But it sounds brilliant! UMC applied heavy compression to the official releases of the Kinks radio sessions, and otherwise the presentation was 'as is', at least it seemed that way - from the masters, just add compression in the mastering stage. Why? The loudness war was supposed to be over *years* ago! UMC, it's worth noting, did an even worse job on their first release of the classic 1972 Roxy Music radio sessions, ruining them, on the Roxy Music first album 2CD release. From 2018, after so much debate and peeling back on brickwalling. Or so we thought - they brickwalled it.So, here, on this Kinks mcps release, a mastering engineer has been allowed to take pride in their work, and present these radio sessions without too much compression, and a little reverb. It really does sound great, and involving.Radio session versions of All day and all of the night, This Strange Effect (wonderful here!), Susannah's Still Alive, Days, Waterloo Sunset and Monica, among many others really come alive here, and in some cases make equally good listening compared to the more polished full recordings the Kinks did. With regards to the quality, the majority of tracks up to track 10 on CD 2 sound great - just a couple were from lesser sources, then live TV performances from track 11 on cd2 onwards are slightly less clear.A great release, highly recommended.
