We have used it to mainly spin dry, wool tops and hand spun yarn that we have hand dyed. I mostly wash by hand soaking, so I've not used it to actually wash anything. You could use the bucket part to soak raw wool if the quantity is not too large (all the parts can be removed easily to use the empty bucket). Hope that makes sense. What I can say is that when you spin the machine it does spin in one direction and not 'tumble' anything, also you can spin it very slowly. Hope this helps.
