The Wm. Smith & Son Adjustable Right Handed Sailmaker's Sewing Palm is a premium leather and metal tool designed for professionals working with heavy materials like canvas, nylon, and leather. Featuring an adjustable strap with brass buckle for a custom fit and a metal plate with divots to securely hold needles, it enables effortless hand-sewing with reduced fatigue. Crafted in England by a century-old sailmaking supplier, this durable palm is a must-have for serious leatherworkers, sailmakers, and craftsmen seeking precision and comfort.

## Description

The Sailmaker's Palm is designed for those working with touch materials like canvas or heavy nylon. It consists of an adjustable leather strap with buckle and thumb hole, together with a metal plate set in rubber. The sewing needle is set in one of the divots in the metal plate, and the sailmaker then uses the palm to push the needle through the material. Any time you're hand-sewing heavy materials like canvas, nylon, or even leather, you will want a Sailmaker's Palm.

Review: Excellent after a slight modification - This is a high-quality heavy-duty product at a reasonable price. I am able to push a sail needle through 3/16" leather with minimal effort. A lot of the reviews complain about it not being comfortable. Since it is made of heavy-duty leather, it is stiff initially. I heated a couple of coats of mink oil into the leather to start breaking it in. My only issue with comfort was the thumb hoop which felt too tight and had too rigid of a profile. To fix this, I spent a few minutes with a sharp knife modifying the thumb hoop. I gradually shaved down the palm-side inner surface of the hoop to enlarge it slightly, and I rounded off (profiled) the hard square edges of the hoop leather where it contacts the inner surface of my thumb. This made a HUGE difference in comfort. After a few minutes of careful work, I had the sewing palm feeling like it was custom made for me.
Review: Game Changer for Hand Sewing on the Boat! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I used this sailor’s palm to hand-sew the leather helm wheel cover on our Leopard 40, and it made all the difference. Before getting it, I tried sewing wax thread by hand and my fingers were aching - I couldn’t work more than an hour without stopping. Once I started using the palm, I was able to sew for three hours straight without hand pain. The quality is excellent and it feels very durable, built to last through many projects. My hands are medium sized and while the palm felt a little big at first, it still worked perfectly and didn’t need to be tight to get the job done. Highly recommend this for anyone doing canvas or leather work on a boat!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this a quality product or is this one of those overseas products that are all over Amazon?**
A: These are made by Wm. Smith & Son in Redditch, England, so technically an overseas product. It's well-made for light use. If you mend sails day in and day out, you will want to spend more for a high quality seaming or roping palm. If you need something for all-day, every-day use, look for Wm Smith & Son's #15 or #16 palms. You'll recognize them by their black varnish. They take a few weeks to fully form to your hand, but customers tell me they're worth it. If you need something for occasional use maintaining sails or doing other heavy sewing (repairing backpacks, etc.), these adjustable palms are great. We also have Wm Smith & Son sailmakers' sewing needles in stock, if you're looking for those. Hope this helps!

**Q: will this fit xxxl hand?**
A: Sorry to say that I think we don't have a palm that will fit your hand.

**Q: Are these sized only for men? Looks large, 1 person complained that parts wont fit where they should for women.**
A: Thanks for your question. I think it probably is sized for men, originally. However, the adjustability allows you to size it down to a much smaller palm. We have not heard any complaints from women about the palms, and we've sold them for almost a decade now. Hope that helps!

Best regards,
Andy at 5col Survival Supply

**Q: what is the circumference in inches or centimeters when it's tightened to the smallest size?**
A: Thanks for your question! Circumference is approximately 9-3/4 inches (24.75 cm) using tightest adjustment. Hope that helps!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Get a bottle of neatsfoot oil
*by A***A on October 24, 2022*

As is from the manufacturer it is brand spanking new leather so it is very stiff and does not conform to the hand very well. I soaked mine in some neatsfoot oil overnight, wiped it down, and then hung it up in front of a fan for a couple weeks to dry back out. Wipe it down again with a clean cloth every couple days. It should be very nice and supple after that. Careful not to get it so deep you start getting the oil all over the rubbery/plastic bits, but it won't hurt the metal buckle. After that it worked just as intended for driving needles. Unfortunately, overall, it is still a little clunky so I find it easier to just hold it on my hand to drive the needles but then take it back off because I lose too much dexterity otherwise.
