Review: Easy and Effective Way to Keep Winter Drafts Out - The Duck Brand Indoor 10-Window Shrink Film Insulator Kit (62-Inch x 420-Inch) is an affordable and surprisingly effective solution for improving window insulation during colder months. The kit comes with enough shrink film to cover multiple windows, making it a great value for homeowners, renters, or anyone looking to reduce drafts and improve energy efficiency. Installation is straightforward: apply the included double-sided tape around the window frame, attach the film, and use a hair dryer to shrink it tight. Once heated, the film becomes smooth and nearly invisible, creating a clear barrier that helps keep warm air inside and cold air outside. The difference is especially noticeable on older or drafty windows. The film remains clear and allows plenty of natural light to enter, unlike heavier insulation options that can block views or make rooms feel darker. It also helps reduce condensation and can contribute to lower heating costs throughout the winter season. Pros: Helps reduce drafts and heat loss Covers up to 10 windows Clear film preserves window visibility Simple installation with a hair dryer Excellent value for the price Cons: Requires careful application for best results Film must be removed and replaced seasonally Overall: The Duck Brand Indoor 10-Window Shrink Film Insulator Kit is a cost-effective and practical way to make your home more comfortable during the winter. It installs easily, works well on drafty windows, and provides noticeable insulation benefits without sacrificing natural light or visibility
Review: Not that difficult, huge difference in draftiness - I highly recommend you read the entire directions, and also the other reviews. By reading the very helpful reviews I was able to learn from people who have done this before. It was so worth the time. Speaking of time... that's really the main thing you want to dedicate to this cause - time. If you rush it, it will be unpleasant and not work well. Get your hairdryer ahead of time. Clean and dry the areas to be sealed. If you are doing an old-fashioned door with a checkered=pattern window, like me... Measure/cut to leave enough extra to seal over the grille [cross pieces on the glass]. I just covered my windows on the front and back door that have the glass checker-board panes. I had to cut the tape into 12 pieces. With this type of application the tape had to go on the glass instead of the sill, because the sill is about 50 years old and if I rip off the paint, there is gonna be hell to pay. No worries. It worked on the glass and the draft stopped immediately. There is an issue I can see, and it was mentioned by other reviewers... You may need to use more tape than provided because in some cases the tape gets touched and loses it's stickiness before you are ready to seal the plastic. No worries, just put another piece of tape and don't touch, put that plastic on fast and don't get too many finger-prints on everything as you try to size it. Fingerprint grease is obviously a glue destroyer. For that it's best to do one section of tape at a time. I've done four windows [counting the two doors as one window] so far and still have plenty of tape left. For best adherence, use the dryer to warm the surface you are applying the tape to, especially if it's glass. Then use the dryer to warm up the tape just before you press the plastic onto it, but not too much or it will dry out. The good thing is that this isn't like saran wrap - if the plastic folds on itself it doesn't stick - hence the tape. I also covered 3 regular, modern windows where I could put the tape directly on the clean sill. Worked great, piece of cake. As far as how much of this stuff there is... definitely enough for 5 windows. In my case I've used scraps on the back door - piecing two remnants from the other windows onto this one, since it's rarely viewed it doesn't need to be perfect. It turned out pretty good and that means you can make at least six window covers if you are willing to be creative. One more thing if you do have very leaky windows like these old doors I'm talking about, you may see what I see... that is condensation pooling at the bottom of the plastic which is pulling the plastic away from the glass in those sections. The way I see it... That is condensation that would be in my house, I'm glad that cold water is in the plastic and not in my air. However that does mean that in order to keep the doors from getting more rickety than they already are I have to sop that water up from time to time... and perhaps replace the tape every so often. No worries. The main thing is my heater goes on about half as much as before. I haven't got an electric bill since installing, but I don't think it's rocket science - that's got to translate to savings worth more than the $8 this kit costs. I will never go a winter without it again. Even if there was no cost savings, not having an uncomfortably drafty house is priceless.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this just one huge roll of shrink film, or is it 10 separate pieces?**
A: It is two semi-huge films, 62 inches by 210 inches each

**Q: Can this be removed and re-used another winter? Sorry if this is answered but didn't get through all 154 reviews. Is it unsightly? Thanks.**
A: Yes, it can be re-used, even if you use a hair dryer to shrink it. I remove it carefully, fold each piece up, and label it with a sticky note telling which room/window you removed it from. This makes it MUCH easier the next year to reappy. You will need to purchase more double-sided tape to reapply the following year, however, I've found that if you search around on amazon, it is sometimes much cheaper to buy a full window kit, rather than the individual, small 24' rolls of replacement tape.

**Q: How does this work? Does it cover the entire window so that you can't open the window?**
A: Yes, it covers the entire window and you wouldn't be able to open it without removing the plastic film. The idea is that, over the winter months, the plastic is taped to the window sill so it sits about 1-2 inches away from the the glass. This traps a pocket of air between the cold winter glass and your warm house in order to have extra insulation. It worked very well to address drafty window. If you're concerned about opening the window at some point in the winter, then consider getting a heavy set curtains to insulate the window. In the past I've just gone out and bought sheets of felt from a fabric store and sewn the top so it could be hung from a curtain rod. Then install the felt curtain under your normal curtain for a warm house.

**Q: Can I put this on windows that are somewhat smaller than 3'x5'? Can these films be cut/shrunk to fit?**
A: Yes, you can cut these films. When you put them on, you can trim them again, if they turn out to be too big. After that, just use a hairdryer to smoothen them (keep a hairdryer not less than 2" from the film, otherwise it will melt).

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Work at preventing condensation
*by A***D on November 12, 2019*

Because we have a 150 g tank in our home, and we live in a cold climate, AND we have old windows, we tend to get A LOT of condensation on our windows, which often freezes over in the middle of the winter on our coldest days. The condensation was leading to pooling of water on our wood windows and causing mold to grow- not great, so I was pretty desperate. I was honestly a little bit dubious that this product would help, but I decided to give it a go because I wanted so bad for SOMETHING to work. I'll start with what I liked: I was actually AMAZED with how well these worked. Before we would feel a cold "draft" (not sure it was cold air blowing through or just colder because the windows are so bad) next to the windows. This significantly cut down on that- there was a noticeable temperature difference using the plastic sheets. Because of this, it also reduced the amount of condensation we saw and although there was still some water on the bottom of the plastic film, there was no where near the amount we saw without it. This is such a significant win, I would sing the praises of this product from the mountains and recommend it to anyone who lives in a colder climate. However, with those praises, there are a couple of caveats (but with all the caveats below, I would still only dock a single star, that's how much I would recommend this film!). Caveat 1: eco-friendly aspect. Increasing heat efficiency is an eco conscious move, I just wish I didn't need to buy (and subsequently throw away) a bunch of plastic to do it. I don't know that there is an easy fix on this fact without just buying all new windows. Caveat 2: tape- they do NOT send you enough tape to do all your windows with the film (I ran out of tape much before running out of film). BUY EXTRA TAPE, you'll need it. Caveat 3- application- it actually isn't that easy to apply at first (by the last window in my house, I was a pro) and the directions aren't really all that helpful. A couple of my own (from trial and error) recommendations: 1. Cut out the film first- I would recommend measuring your window and then increasing your measurements by an inch on either side. This gives you a little bit of a buffer, and you can always trim the edges off later. I found that it was very difficult to cut precisely and this gave me a little bit of wiggle room. Cut multiple pieces at once (if you have the same sized windows) by overlapping the film. 2. Add your tape to the window edges. I started on one side, added the tape, removed that backing. Then added tape to an adjacent side, removed the backing, etc. This made it easier to remove the backing (which was not as easy as you might expect). 3. Add the film to the window starting on the top and then pushing down the sides and finally on the bottom. 4. Use a HIGH HEAT blow dryer to shrink the film. Don't get too close because you can piece the film with the blow dryer. 5. Trim edges if you want 6. Do all of this on a warmer day (especially if you're concerned about condensation). This way, you won't trap extra moisture in between the glass and the film.
