It is rarely found in nature as a pure element but rather as salts (iodide) found in seawaters, seaweed, and soil. Most people are not getting sufficient iodine from diet alone — nor from just their multivitamin alone either. A full dose (3 drops = 225 mcg) in my opinion is overkill, but I’ve found that 1 drop (since my multivitamin already provides 75 mcg which is 50% of recommended daily intake) does the job excellently.
