The clip was fiddly to get on and it was a bit askew, but I found that if the activity LED powered on briefly whilst plugging the programmer in, then it was properly connected. Don't be tempted to move the clip around whilst it's powered, you might fry the chip it's attached to. I can't comment on the provided software as I used flashrom on Linux, which worked without issue when the clip was properly attached.
