The first thing I noticed was the heavy-duty feel of the thick cowhide leather and the rugged stitching. They feel like proper protective gloves rather than thin BBQ mitts. The extra-long length is a big plus, as it gives me much more peace of mind by protecting my wrists and forearms from stray sparks, ash, and radiant heat. I used them while getting the coals ready in my Weber Rapidfire chimney starter and then tipping and distributing the hot coals into the Char-Baskets while cooking a beer can chicken. They did a great job of blocking the heat from the flames and coals, and I had no problem gripping my barbecue tools while wearing them. They are thick gloves, so you do lose a bit of fine finger dexterity, but for barbecue, fire pit, fireplace, or chimney starter use, I would much rather have the extra protection. One word of caution: I would not treat these as magic gloves for holding glowing hot metal, hot ash, or open flames for long periods.
