Alyssa ana’Raisa, the reluctant princess heir to the Gray Wolf throne of the Fells, feels more comfortable striking with a sword than maneuvering at court. After a brush with death, Lyss goes on the offensive, meaning to end the war that has raged her whole life. If her gamble doesn’t pay off, she could lose her queendom before she even ascends to the throne. Across enemy lines in Arden, young rising star Captain Halston Matelon is being sent on ever more dangerous assignments. Between the terrifying rumors of witches and wolfish warriors to the north and his cruel king at home, Hal is caught in an impossible game of life and death. Lyss and Hal’s intricately linked fates become inseparable when they fall under the shadow of a new enemy—a force that threatens to extinguish the last rays of hope in the Shattered Realms. Enemies to Lovers: She’s a princess trying to win a war; he’s the enemy captain sent on impossible missions. Their fates are bound together, but their kingdoms want them on opposite sides of the battlefield. High Stakes Fantasy: A desperate gamble to end the war could cost Lyss her queendom, while Hal is caught in a deadly game between a cruel king and the front lines. Dark Magic: As Lyss and Hal are drawn together, a new shadowy force rises—an enemy wielding a dark magic that threatens to destroy everything they’re fighting for. Just as good as book 1. *by on Reviewed in the United States August 27, 2025* This book 2 in the series didn't let me down, it was just as good as the first. I loved the characters and the intrigue of the plot. There were still multiple points of view showing us the events from every side. Our characters deal with battles, loss, love, music, and magics effects. There are pirates and dragons creating surprising twists. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Book 2 is done and it is AWESOME..... Now What? Six more months for book 2. Aaaaargh! *by on Reviewed in the United States September 17, 2017* The second book in this series (Shattered Realms) which is set in the same world as the Seven Realms (although a few years later). The second book is somewhat concurrent with the first (meaning the event in this book happen at the same time or very nearly the same time than the first book) which means you won't see the main characters from the first book in this book.In addition, this book doesn't pick-up where the last one ended. So you want to know what happened to Ash or Lila I am sorry to say that you will not know at all in book two (yep you'll probably have to wait to book three or four?). Yet I still loved the book and forgot all about Ash and Lila and even Jenna. Good news you get to see Jenna and Flamecaster in this book but she's still not there much either. If you read book one (which if you haven't you should) you'll know immediately who the Shadowcaster is once you get to meet the character. I won't spoil it but again just like in the first book the central character of this book is not Shadowcaster although it is an origin story of sorts for Shadowcaster. It will also be obvious to you by now who Stormcaster is since you've already met him in book one and there is one scene with him in this book.My only negative comment about this book is that I finished it too quickly and now I have to wait six months for book 3? Aaaaaah Chimaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!Cinda Williams Chima is one of the most consistent authors out there. She is a good writer and the perfect mix of romance, violence, adventure, intrigue without getting bogged down with overly descriptive vocabulary. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Much better than the first *by on Reviewed in the United States October 31, 2022* It’s not easy to collect my thoughts right after finishing this but it felt better than the first. In terms of story both books were good but in terms of handling emotions this one was so much improved! That would be my review summary. This part of the story frustratingly does not include Adrian. It’s hard to swallow, however it’s true. Jenna has a small part but again she is not the protagonist here.We follow Lyss, Andrew’s sister, who is leading a warband for fellsmarch. She is intriguing and extremely likable and has a proper non generic personality. She Carrie’s the book on her broad shoulders.Lyss is not the only protagonist. Hal, her opponent in the field is the gentleman from Arden and we like him too. He doesn’t have such a unique personality, however it’s good enough. He has his own troubles with Arden, but those pale to the troubles Alyssa brings to him.Bree is the third protagonist, special in many ways (don’t want to spoil anything). He is an interesting addition, certain to play a more important role in the future. One more likable character. The story is good enough to hold our interest firmly. Investing on personal relations, romance and drama usually pays off and it worked like a charm. This book packs everything: drama, romance, action, a bit of politics and an interesting cast of protagonists. What is missing? Well, Adrian for starters and a decent antagonist. Yes, Celestia is gonna get in those shoes but at the moment she has barely registered her presence. The big question id wether I’m reading the next. Well, yes. I don’t expect the best series of my life but it should be quite enjoyable to read --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/116775130-shadowcaster-a-thrilling-ya-fantasy-of-war-dark-magic-reluctant](https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/116775130-shadowcaster-a-thrilling-ya-fantasy-of-war-dark-magic-reluctant) --- *Product available on Desertcart South Africa* *Store origin: ZA* *Last updated: 2026-10-19*
