The scanner worked properly. I returned the A3 1200S scanner (DOA) & purchased the A3 2400S - a little more expensive, so my observations are for the A3 2400S model. It should be OK though - same design.The only other observation I can make is that the objects must be flat - the depth of field for these type scanners, as opposed to the CCD type devices, which are at least three times as expensive, is nonexistent. But for flat objects it's just fine - and fast. **Q: Are the edges level with the glass so that I can scan a larger painting flat against it or are the beveled outward?** A: you cannot scan anything larger than the glass size without letting light in, which spoils the scan; furthermore the size of the scanned image cannot exceed approximately 10" x 16", although it will appear that there's more scanning area. That said, it's a reliable machine, and the larger scan area has been a boon for me. One last thing to beware of: the bottom of the machine is made of a soft rubber plastic that can easily warp if not fully supported, and, if it warps, the machine won't function as it blocks the moving part. **Q: Can the cover be removed in order to scan larger images** A: Yes, the cover can be removed and Mustek's A3 1200 HS still can be used to scan very large items. But, if any of the glass area is not covered during the scan, the image will have lines in that area in the file. To solve this, I recommend you use a piece of BLACK paper to mask any uncovered area on the glass. This is similar to using a copy machine with the door open, one must put down a piece of WHITE paper to mask any open glass area.
