It cuts straight, you cannot see the zig zag. **Q: Is Emma Oliver a real person or just the name used for this brand of scissors?** A: No idea. Scissors are very similar to name brand. I had to return first pair, but second pair cuts well **Q: Can these be used for cutting goldwork materials such as pearl purl?** A: I don’t personally do goldwork, but I see no reason these scissors shoulnd’t work just fine. They’re strong with fine serrations on one blade; very sharp with a good defined point. I have several pair in different sizes and all I use for all my hand sewing. **Q: Can these be used for cutting goldwork materials such as pearl purl?** A: I personally wouldn't use them for pearl purl; but that doesn't mean you can't. I use mine for cutting wool and freezer paper for applique.
