Review: Continue Following The Path - The Witcher: Curse of Crows is a 5 issues comic book series set in the CD Projekt video game continuity. It's written by Paul Tobin, It is the third volume in the franchise and my personal favorite as this volume out of all three volumes is connected to the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I must warn people who have not finished the game it is post Wild Hunt with a canon ending and choices. So if you haven’t finished it you will be spoiled and if you have like I did, you will see the canon ending and choices to The Witcher 3. The reason why it's’ my favorite it real explores Geralt’s family dynamic while the other volumes just have Geralt with someone else in Curse Crows it follows his daughter Ciri and his wife Yennefer. As someone who has played the games reading the dialogue you can practically hear Geralt’s grizzled voice and his famous sacracism. Another thing that was an improvement was the art. The other art from the two volumes’ art was not that good it was very inconsistent. This isn’t the best art but it's an improvement over past volumes. The story is well done although I wish the ending with the boy who turns into a crow would of had more closure, it's really left up in the air. But as a Witcher fan it did justice to the world of the Witcher. Would highly recommend to Witcher fans and fans of fantasy in general even though it's connected to the continuity of the games. If you haven’t touched the games you can still follow the story without being confused. A good read. Review: An exciting continuation of The Witcher saga set after the (good) ending of The Witcher 3! - An absolutely incredible follow-up to the Witcher 3 storyline. Unlike the last 2 graphic novels which could have been set practically any number of places within the Witcher timeline, the story for Curse of Crows is definitively set AFTER the events of The Witcher 3 and assume a specific ending was chosen, it is thus EXTREMELY recommended you have played The Witcher 3 and beaten the game to see this ending, certain elements of the story may not make sense otherwise. This book has a lot of throwbacks to the first chapter of The Last Wish in which Geralt fought the Striga and it's great to see it mentioned and discussed in detail here as well. There's a lot of great dialogue and banter throughout the story and it moves along at quite a quick pace, cutting out long travels and interspersing various side-stories that will make players of the game feel right at home. The art is very well done though a bit stylized it may not be to everyone's liking, but I found it very fitting for the story being told. There is ample amounts of fan service in this volume as well, with lots of nudity. The books, the games and even the first two comic volumes are all great and all help create and reinforce this amazing world that is a blend of the familiar and the unique. However, I can't help feeling that the team behind this entry (Curse of Crows) really phoned it in. The art is mediocre - lots of brown and tan city backgrounds or clothing and many frames feature the characters in an "out of focus" perspective with very little fine detail. Also, all the main characters (Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer) are shown in their same clothing from The Witcher 3. I mean, I know the game was popular guys, but maybe a little creativity or imagination would be nice? I liked the armor Geralt starts the game with too, but it just seems lazy for it to be the only thing he wears in the entire comic. My point is, if you're looking at the cover thinking you'll see some imaginative, colorful and detailed art in this volume, guess again. From art to the story...also a pretty big let down. Maybe I need to go through it one more time, but the story of Curse of Crows is meandering at best and more likely a completely unfocused mess. Guess how many times characters go swimming or take a bath in Curse of Crows. I bet you wouldn't guess eight - eight times! And for literally no reason. No connection (really) to the plot whatsoever. Also, who decided that it was "in character" for Geralt to bathe in a thong? Seriously no, just no. So many times throughout this story I kept thinking, "Why are they showing us this? Why are they telling us this? What's the point?" I still can't find a good answer to most of it. So what if the overarching story is mediocre, at least it has the characters we know and love right? Well, yes and no. If you played through all of the Witcher 3, you might find that the characters as represented in Curse of Crows are 2D or maybe 2.5D copies. Geralt is gruff and stoic. Ciri is eager and brave, but a little brash. Yennefer is emotionally distant and manipulative. Ho hum, same old same old. Ciri gets angry because Geralt and Yen are treating her like a child and she's grown up blah blah blah. Yen gets passive aggressively angry at Geralt for not agreeing to her whims *yawn* More of the same, no new developments. So in the end, I will agree with many other reviewers - if you are a Witcher fan, you should probably get this. As much as this volume is really nothing special, it is still set in a universe which many of us love. The other two comics were waaaaay better though, so if you haven't read those yet, start there.
